Camps Event Formats

There are many format options for Camps events depending on the length, the community and so on.

For many groups, a mixing of methods may be most appropriate given a mixed audience (people from various backgrounds with differing levels of experience or comfort level to a truly “open spaces” event). As an example, consider how you can blend formats to encourage participation throughout the day:

9 am – 9:15 am
Welcome from organizers and explanation of the day (goals and how it will work)

9:15 am – 10:15 am
Views from the field (4x25min or 5x20min presentations from local thought leaders or changemakers about their view of social technology and social impact)

10:15 am – 10:30 am
Coffee break

10:30 am – 11:30 am
Facilitated conversations (2 or 3 topics w/ preselected facilitators)

11:30 am – 12 pm
Report outs and afternoon plans (ask people to share what their group discussed as well as any personal learnings from the morning + explain how the open session will work in the afternoon and encourage people to use the lunch hour to start propagating the wall with topics)

12 pm – 1 pm
Lunch and topic building (provide sticky notes on the tables so people can being writing questions or topics for the afternoon open spaces – have a wall or other designated space for people to post them. by the time lunch is over the space should have all the sticky notes people want to submit and should be grounded into similar questions/topics by participants)

1 pm – 2 pm
Open session round 1 (ask people to volunteer to lead a question/topic and take a group to an area)

2 pm – 2:15 pm
Insights & Sharing (encourage people to share a report of what their group is talking about or things they’ve learned)

2:15 pm – 3:15 pm
Open session round 2 (encourage people to start a new discussion or join a different group)

3:15 pm – 4:15 pm
Insights & Sharing

4:15 pm – 4:30 pm
Closing and thank you from organizers
